Livestream: ‘To Drift and Return’

On Friday 22 March 2024 myself, Pooja Angra and Anna Durance shared an Instagram livestream performance of our experimental improvised piece ‘To Drift and Return’.

The piece used a one page score — a set of musical ideas, structures and instructions which were pulled and developed from ideas explored in our initiation day in February — to provide an overall shape and guidance to the improvised performance.

In two movements — the first, “To Each Other, To Ourselves’ and the second, ‘To Long In Frenetic Calm’ — the piece explored themes of belonging.

Over the coming weeks I will be mixing and editing the audio and video recordings from the day, along with further reflections on the piece and the discoveries made through its musical explorations.

On a personal note, I wanted to take the moment to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who was a part of this first performance: to everyone who logged in and watched; to the tech team who supported and made things run smoothly; to all the colleagues and peers who have been part of the many deep conversations which have helped refine these ideas; to Arts Council for funding the project; and to Anna and Pooja for their kindness, patience and willingness to come on this wild adventure with me — I could not have done it without you!
